Whatever specialty or training a nurse aide has acquired will determine the type of tasks he will be assigned with. In most nursing care facilities, nurse aides are responsible for feeding, bathing, and grooming patients. They monitor important vital signs of patients such as pulse rate, blood pressure, and temperature. They may also perform clerical tasks such as answering phone calls, processing bills, and monitoring inventory.

Working as a nursing assistant means that he will always be in direct contact with patients, especially because he needs to monitor any problem or sudden changes in their medical condition and immediately reporting them to the nursing or medical staff. For anyone considering becoming a nurse aide, a short period of training is all that’s required. Short courses on this career can be availed from a wide range of nursing care facilities, vocational/technical schools, and select community colleges. It is also possible to acquire the needed skills by undergoing an on-the-job training administered by a registered nurse. Training can also be acquired from workshops and seminars as well.

A nurse aide is required by the Federal Government to be certified before they can be employed, especially if they intend to work in nursing care facilities. Certification requires at least 75 hours of State-approved training, as well as successful completion of a certification exam. Nurse aides who complete these requirements move on to become a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA).
